Oral treatments focus on inhibiting inflammation and the development of scar tissue, but there is little evidence to support their effectiveness.  Utah Men’s Health uses oral treatments sparingly, but they can include:

  • Pentoxifylline (Trental)
  • Daily Phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors (i.e. sildenafil, tadalafil)
  • L-arginine
  • Vitamin E

Penile Traction Therapy

Traction, or stretching, therapy focuses on stretching the penis over time in order to straighten it.  Early evidence shows that penile stretching can improve curvature over time.

Injections into Scar Tissue

There are a number of medications that are effective in the treatment of Peyronie’s disease when injected directly into the plaque / scar tissue. These include:

  • Collagenase (Xiaflex) – an enzyme that breaks down scar tissue
  • Interferon – a protein that disrupts the formation of scar tissue
  • Verapamil – a blood pressure medication that, in the setting of Peyronie’s disease, halts the formation of scar tissue
